Hi girls,
'My Aussie Mum' by Australian author, Yvonne Morrison, is a fantastic book to introduce Australian children to. Students in Australia could relate to many situations and events within the book. There are references to sports that Australian kids are familiar with e.g. netball and cricket. There is also a lot of Australian slang and colloquial language used in the book, such as 'trackydacks'.
The story follows a stereotypically tough Aussie mum doing her best every day in a range of areas. These include playing netball, cheering on her kids at cricket, looking after her sick children, being a chauffeur and much more. The Aussie mum is able to cope with all of these committments because of her love for her children and her resilience.
I noticed that the illustrations and inclusion of many different Aussie mums at the end of the book really highlighted the multicultural nature of Australia. Some Aussie mums are Asian, Indian, European, etc. This depicts our society really well and ensures that this book is relatable for all students, regardless of their background/culture.
I would reccommend this book for students anywhere between the ages of 5-10. Younger students may just focus on the story and how it relates to their lives. However, older children may be encouraged to write their own story reflecting the daily activities of their own Aussie mums.
Kirsty
P.S. Yvonne Morrison does not have a website but I have done a bit of research and discovered an Aussie theme amongst her books. For example, she has also written a book called, "An Aussie Night Before Christmas" and "The Cocky Who Cried Dingo".
