The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister

This beautiful book was one of my favourites as a child, so I had to include it! The narrative centres on the protagonist, Rainbow Fish who is the most beautiful fish in the ocean. He is asked to share his shining scales with a little blue fish, but refuses. He is then ignored by all the other fish in the sea and he is unsure why this is happening. He asks the wise octopus for advice and she tells him to give away his scales to the other fish. Rainbow Fish doesn't really want to but he decides to give all of his scales away except for one. Although he is less beautiful than he was before, Rainbow Fish makes new friends and is now the happiest fish in the sea for this reason.

This picture book covers some relevant issues/themes that young children are faced with. They include sharing, selfish behaviour, friendships and acceptance. The illustrations really draw the reader in, particularly those of the Rainbow Fish whose scales are glittery and shiny!

  2. Thanks Kirsty!

I have just read this book, quite unaware that you had put up this post. I enjoyed the book too and am not sure how some people have gotten such off the track meanings from it. But the themes/issues you put up there make sense. Alex
